Having engaged subjects as diverse as multiculturalism or anti-racism, some of my work reproduces familiar visual signs arranging them into new conceptually layered pieces such as those combined into sculptures.
Each of my work is engraved with fragments: photographs, objects, drawings, paintings, texts and other inventions. The subject matter of each body of work determines the materials and the forms of the work.
As a Sculpturer, I use a variety of materials from steel and glass to bronze to create shape-changing art forms.
As a Figurative painter, I capture and illustrate the expressions and movements of the human body. My work addressing the human body with anonymous faces is representational. Depicting human poise and anatomically correct proportions, each painting combines canvas, wood, metal, oil and cloth.
My artwork creates a social environment in which people come together to participate in a shared activity. I am driven to create the expression of my feelings, imagination and reason, which are charged with intense curiosity.
In my Portraits, Face, Expression and Personality prevail rather than the superficial.
As a Still Life painter, the items I portray are mostly selected for their shapes, textures and colours and for any symbolic meaning they may have. I essentially paint vegetables, most of the times combining them with unsual elements – masks from different cultures – full of force and intensity creating thus a new narrative within the composition.

STATE OF ART

Incorporation of new ideas in Julio Quaresma’s unique art has earned him recognition internationally. In order to make advancements in the already existing artwork Quaresma has created Playing Equality, Greek Discobulos, The World Game and Scars of Memory. Channeling strong emotions and feelings, He was totally inspired to create Playing Equality as to honor the memories of those who have left in September 11 human tragedy. The same happened with Scars of Memory which is an epithet for loss, trauma, and human resilience. An epithet for consistency of traumatic emotional memories. Paying tribute to the Olympic Games and congratulating the athletes on their outstanding performances, celebrating the power of making, The artist was also inspired to create Greek Discobulos and The Game Of The World or The World Game or The Game With the World or The World With the Game.

This environmental art for collective consciousness aims to confront traditional notions of “spectatorship,” promoting involvement over complacency and conveying a collective call to action. Juxtapositions of mediums, content, scale, forced perspectives and changes in cadence and flow are encouraging viewers to become both physically and psychologically aware of their own roles as “spectators” — symbolic of a greater need for action in the pursuit of consciousness to loss, trauma, and human resilience.

For over three decades that Julio Quaresma has had many solo and collective exhibitions and retrospectives in reputable Museums and Galleries, and numerous Art Institutes Museums in Portugal and around the world.


Apart from prestigious Portuguese Museums and Art Galleries, Quaresma’s paintings were well received abroad. Bringing light to innovative visual artists, most of Quaresma’s paintings were captured in Institute of Valencià d`Art Modern (Valencia/Spain), Centro Dragão do Mar de Arte e Cultura (Fortaleza, Ceará/ Brazil), Estado de Pernambuco Museum (Recife/ Brazil), America Latina Memorial (São Paulo/Brazil), Óscar Niemayer Museum (Curitiba, Paraná/ Brasil), Huambo Museu (Angola), Boricua College (New York).


Quaresma´s artistic work was also represented in prestigious and collective exhibitions and biennals in Asia – China; America - USA, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Argentine, Brasil; Europe – Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Finland; and Africa- Angola and S.Tomé e Principe.


The End of the World Biennal (Ushuaia/ Argentine), Beijing OLYMPIC GAMES Arte y Deporte Exhibition (Beijing/ China), Judite Galleries (New York/ USA), Belas Artes de Gravina Museum (Alicante/ Spain), Galeria d’Art Marabelló (Barcelona/ Spain), Sallon D’Autonne (Paris/ France) are some to be mentioned.


Strengthening his presence and reputation, Julio Quaresma’s most recent work The Game Of The World or The World Game or The Game With the World or The World With the Game, will be displayed in 2012 London OLYMPIC GAMES (London, UK).

His art is collected by major corporations and private collectors.

STILL LIFE PAINTINGS

Taking his workart into new directions Julio Quaresma was defied by other artistic possibilities that he enthusiastically pursued.
Ranging from a sense of drama to refined irony Quaresma´s still life paintings include mostly vegetables. The artist combines colourful and typical fresh Portuguese vegetables with a variety of masks, ranging from Oriental to Ocidental culture. They seem to convey political and social meaning.

FIGURATIVE PAINTINGS

Bodies, sculptural objects, that's what Julio Quaresma paints to make his canvas where anonymous faces seem to be playing an important role. Occasionally he indulges in wryly humorous works of fantasy, but is primarily a representational artist. Very much observant of extraordinary endeavour as to raise awareness towards the rights of minority groups, some of his works contain social commentary appealing to people's sense of justice. Throughout his adult life, Julio has been active in humanitarian work in Portugal.
